Shirisha, a student of Telangana Social Welfare Residential school, Nancharla, became the first girl from the social welfare institutions to clinch a gold medal at the national-level Junior Coastal Multiclass Regatta held in Mumbai from April 27 to May 2. “My ambition is to become a world champion in sailing and bring laurels to the country,” said the class VIII student hailing from Pagidiyala village in Mahabubnagar district. Like many of her other classmates, she too hails from a poor socio-economic background with her mother being a migrant farm labourer.

Trained at The Hyderabad Yacht Club, she has proved that nothing is impossible if one gets a right opportunity.

Director of the Club, Suheim Sheik, said students from the welfare residential institutions have potential to become world champions in sailing.
