ORR: Pedda Amberpet-Ghatkesar stretch opens

The 14-km-long Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch between Pedda Amberpet and Ghatkesar has been opened for traffic on Wednesday. With this stretch added, a total of 134 km of the 158 km long access-controlled expressway circling the city beyond suburbs taken up by the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), has come into use for the traffic.

The eight-lane main carriageway of Pedda Amberpet-Ghatkesar stretch opened on Tuesday would facilitate seamless travel for vehicles coming from Warangal and proceeding towards Vijayawada and vice-versa. Costing about Rs.300 crore and executed by NCC Limited, this route also makes it easier for travel between Ghatkesar and surrounding areas to the airport.

According to the HGCL Chief General Manager B. Anand Mohan, the last bits of the final arc running to a length of about 23 km between Ghatkesar and Shamirpet were now left, to complete the ring of the ORR. Of this, 11 km between Ghatkesar and Keesara was almost completed and expected to be ready for opening by June. A road over bridge has to be completed on this particular stretch for which clearances were awaited from the South Central Railway. Another issue for this stretch has been at Kandlakoya which has reached the Supreme Court and orders were awaited on taking up this bit of 1.1 km, officials said.

However, a major hold up for the project has been the 10.3 km between Keesara and Shamirpet for which earlier contract was terminated, fresh tenders floated and selections done. “The administrative sanctions were issued and we will take it ahead and hope to have it completed by year-end,” Mr. Anand Mohan added.
