The fate of former MPTC member N Srinivas Rao of the ruling TRS, who was abducted by suspected Maoists from his house in Kothuru village of Charla mandal in Bhadrachalam Agency on Monday night, remained unknown till Wednesday night.

Attempts by a group of local villagers including several tribal people, who ventured into the dense forest areas abutting the restive south Bastar region of neighbouring Chhattisgarh in tractors to trace Mr Srinivas, proved futile, sources said.

With no information about the whereabouts of Mr Srinivas forthcoming even 48 hours after his abduction, his wife Durga and son Praveen spent agonising moments at their residence in the remote village worried about the fate of their breadwinner.

Appeal

The distraught mother-son duo made a renewed appeal for the safe release of Mr Srinivas. "He enjoys good rapport with all villagers and never harmed anyone," Ms Durga said pleading for the safe release of her husband.

Meanwhile, posters in the name of "Adivasi organisations" with an appeal to the Maoists to free Mr Srinivas unharmed surfaced at R Kothagudem, Tegada and a few other interior villages on the fringes of dense forests in Charla mandal.

The posters mentioned Mr Srinivas as a "generous farmer" who extended financial assistance to the needy Adivasis living in Kothuru and various other habitations under the Pedamidisileru Gram Panchayat.
