The negligence of Roads and Buildings (R&B) authorities in the execution of road laying was the reason for the caving in of a portion of it recently, said Mayor S. Ravinder Singh.

Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said the municipal authorities had no role in the laying of the R&B roads and its maintenance. The R&B authorities were laying the 14.5-kilometer length for the last few years and they constructed the side-drains into which the rainwater was unable to flow, he said.

As there was no flow of water in the drains, the municipality had to use the septic tank suction machines to check breeding of mosquitoes due to water logging in them.

At the Mankammathota where the road caved in, the R&B authorities had not constructed the culverts and laid the road without proper rolling with road roller, he alleged. He also claimed that he had lodged a complaint a year ago with the District Collector and state R&B officials against the poor quality of work.

He also said he would now write to the government seeking vigilance inquiry into the ₹10-crore road work in the town.

‘Ponnam stopped work’

Refuting the allegations made by former MP Ponnam Prabhakar on the development of Karimnagar, he said the former MP had failed to secure single paisa from the then Congress government at Centre or the State government for the development of town. “Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar obstructed the road widening work in Mankammathota locality by securing G.O. for laying only 80-foot road in his locality when elsewhere the road was widened to 100 feet,” he alleged.

He also dared the former MP to come for an open debate on the development work taken up during the TRS regime.

“Mr. Prabhakar promised 24x7 water supply in the town and failed to fulfil it,” he observed.

Deputy Mayor G. Ramesh, Corporator Y. Sunil Rao and others were also present.
