City police arrested an Islamic State sympathiser who was allegedly planning subversive activities upon instructions from other sympathisers.

The police nabbed Konakalla Subramanyam alias Omer from Tolichowki on Friday and found incriminating material on his mobile phone. Cops were tracking his social media activity for a while before they zeroed in on him.

Upon interrogation, Subramanyam told the police that he had converted to Islam in 2014. Later, he began chatting with IS sympathisers on social media.

The police learnt that he was having regular conversations with a Mumbai resident identified as Abu Qahafa Al-Hind, who wanted Subramanyam to carry out terror activities.

Cases were booked against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, charging him with criminal conspiracy, sedition and waging war against the State. After the arrest, the police remanded Subramanyam in judicial custody.
