Heavy rain lashed the city again on Monday, throwing life out of gear in several localities which experienced heavy waterlogging and consequently, traffic woes.
What began as a drizzle around noon soon developed in intensity and spread to many localities. Rainfall ranged between 7cm maximum to 2cm minimum across localities, with Western Zone bearing the maximum brunt.
As per data from the automatic weather stations by 7 p.m., Madhapur and Jubilee Hills areas had received the highest rainfall at 7cm, followed by Khajaguda at 6.9cm. Rainfall over and above 6cm was recorded at several other areas, including Moosapet and Kukatpally.
Areas in Central Zone, including Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Begumpet, Trimulgherry, Musheerabad, Alwal, Yusufguda, Qutbullahpur and Amberpet, among others received considerable rain.
Severe waterlogging on Madhapur main road gave motorists a nightmarish experience, leaving them stranded on roads for hours. “The whole stretch from Shilparamam junction up to Road No.45 was under water. I saw luxury cars submerged in waist-deep water,” said a commuter.
The situation on Nectar Garden road near Durgam Cheruvu was worse, and traffic came to a standstill for hours on all these stretches. Roads were flooded at other locations such as Biodiversity Junction in Gachibowli and ESI, Sanatnagar, Khairatabad, Nampally, Lakdikapul, Tank Bund, Addagutta, Suraram, Uppuguda and others. Traffic moved at a snail’s pace owing to waterlogging.
Cyberabad Traffic Police issued repeated advisories for commuters on their official Twitter account, specifying which routes to take, and which to avoid. Twitter was abuzz with pictures and accounts of inundation in Madhapur.
“Day one of being employed at Hyderabad and I already hate this city. Can public transport be any poorer? #HyderabadRains,” posted a Twitter user, Gokul.
“The Travel in Hitec needs to get hitech. The infrastructure is so bad that we need to teleport ourselves,” said Shyam, responding to another tweet.
Under the impact of rain, trees and branches fell on cars at a few locations, damaging them. GHMC had received 22 rain-related complaints by 7.30 p.m., 17 of those pertaining to waterlogging, and four pertaining to tree falls. GHMC Commissioner D.S. Lokesh Kumar inspected the waterlogged areas in the West Zone along with zonal commissioner D.Hari Chandana.
The Met department has predicted generally cloudy sky with rain or thundershowers for the city in the coming week.
Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana, it said.
