The Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates in the capital will be merged soon to carve out four new ones to be headed by a Chief Commissioner of Police.

The Police Department mooted this proposal envisaging better policing with easy accessibility to people and a committee of top police officials was constituted to study it, DGP V. Dinesh Reddy said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

The committee is expected to submit a report in the month following the unification of the two commissionerates and creation of four new ones.

The new commissionerates to be formed are Hyderabad, Hyderabad-South, Cyberabad and Secunderabad. Police stations that are predominantly rural in Cyberabad like Ibrahimpatnam and Ghatkesar will be given back to Ranga Reddy district out of which Cyberabad commissionerate was created 10 years ago.

The committee of police officers will examine the structure and functioning of Mumbai and Chennai police commissionerates to adopt better administrative principles in the proposed new commissionerates.

“The proposal requires no new infrastructure like buildings, vehicles or resources. The present policemen and officers will be disbursed equally among the four new ones,” the DGP said.

Traffic police

However, it is not yet decided whether to bring the traffic police under a single umbrella after the unification and continue that system.

The possibility of each commissionerate having a separate traffic police wing akin to other units like Task Force cannot be ruled out. But, the city traffic police would have a new dress code on the lines of their counterparts in Bangalore.

Each of the four new Commissioners and Chief Commissioner of Police heading them will be of the rank of Inspector General of Police and Additional Director General of Police respectively. The new Commissioner will have all powers in the jurisdiction of the commissionerate concerned, similar to those invested in Hyderabad Police Commissioner as per City Police Act.

The Chief Commissioner will co-ordinate, correspond with the government, make inter-zonal transfers and supervise the overall administration. The office will be located in the present Hyderabad Police Commissionerate at Basheerbagh.
