One has heard of people dying with electric shock. But there is an incident of power bill shock claiming the life of an elderly person, if Congress MLA and former Minister J. Geeta Reddy is to be believed.

Dr. Geeta Reddy brought such an instance to the notice of the Assembly during the Zero Hour on Monday.

She said residents of Didgi village in her constituency Zaheerabad were in for shock recently when they received inflated power bills for their dwellings - huts and houses with tin roofs. A family received bill to the tune of ₹ 1.07 lakh towards power dues to its surprise. The elderly of the house approached the officials concerned and represented the matter, but in vain. Faced with inflated bill and threat of action from the department, the man suffered heart attack and succumbed. “The government has the responsibility to compensate the family,” she said.

This prompted Minister Jupally Rao to assure that the govt. would conduct an in-depth probe into the issue and take necessary action at the earliest.
