On Friday, M. Rajasekhar, father of three-year-old Nivedita, was beaming from ear to ear.

The cause for his unconcealed happiness was the fact that his daughter literally came back from the brink. This January, the doctors had detected that she had medulloblastoma, a paediatric malignant brain tumour.

The panicked father, in search of treatment, found himself and his daughter at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai from where he was referred back to Hyderabad and specifically to Yashoda Hospitals. “It’s amazing that she has recovered so well from the cancer treatment within a few months. At present, she is just like any other three-year-old kid,” says a smiling Rajasekhar.

According to doctors at Yashoda Hospitals, the girl also happened to be the 10,000th patient to undergo targeted Rapid Arc radiotherapy for cancer. To mark this, the hospital management presented a cheque worth Rs. 2 lakh to Nivedita for her future educational requirements.

On the occasion, hospital authorities announced that soon a Proton Therapy cancer treatment facility will be set up here. “We are coming up with this facility with a cost of Rs. 200 crore. This therapy will enable us to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumour without increasing the risk of side effects and long term complications for patients,” says MD, Yashoda Group of Hospitals, G.S. Rao.

Star actor Rana Daggubati, who was the chief guest, gave away the Rs. 2 lakh cheque to the family members of Nivedita.

“Consistent monitoring and timely treatment of cancer is very important. Thanks to highly skilled healthcare workers and technology, there is a ray of hope for cancer patients,” the actor said. Doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and a host of other hospital staff were present.
