Eleven-year-old Konda Sarath would surely remember August 14 fondly for the rest of his life! On Thursday, the youngster’s wish was fulfilled when Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao graciously came to spend time with him and his parents. Sarath, who underwent a heart surgery at Apollo Hospitals, always wanted to become a surgeon and that wish too could be a reality in future.

After chatting with Sarath and his parents, Mr. Rao promised to finance his education so that Sarath could become a doctor. This is not all, the Chief Minister went one step ahead and promised a house for Sarath and his parents and also decided to open a fixed deposit of Rs. 5 lakh to meet his medical expenses in the future.

He interacted with the child’s family for a while before enquiring about his recovery from the doctors. “It’s a very rare gesture from the Chief Minister. Other leaders too should take this lead,” said Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, Dr. Pratap C. Reddy.

Doctors said Sarath was born with a defect in heart and had a single ventricle in place of the normal two. There were also defects in the heart valves and major blood vessels. “It was a 12-hour surgery to correct birth defects. The child can now lead a normal life,” said Dr. Girish Warier, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon.

Apollo Hospitals Joint MD Sangita Reddy, Dr. Pushpa Devi from Make a Wish Foundation and others were present on the occasion.
