As many as 68 IPS probationers passing out from Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy here on Saturday hold MBBS and engineering degrees.

The list of 92 IPS probationers, including 12 women, is dominated by 57 engineering graduates and 11 medicos, while seven people hold a masters degree in business administration. None of the 12 women IPS probationers have been allotted to the two Telugu-speaking States.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, NPA Director Abhay said Home Minister Amit Shah would be the chief guest for Dikshant Samaroh (passing out parade) to be held on Saturday on the academy premises.

He said the passing out parade was the major event in the life of every IPS officer, which marks the conclusion of their basic training.

“Apart from 92 IPS probationers, there are 11 foreign officers, including six officers of Royal Bhutan Police and five from Nepal Police,” the Director said.

He said three IPS probationers – Gaush Alam (Delhi), G. Vineeth (Karnataka) and P. Shabrish (Karnataka) – have been allotted to Telangana, while three of their batchmates – Bindu Madhav Garikapati (Telangana), Vasana Vidhya Sagar Naidu (Telangana) and Tuhin Sinha (Uttar Pradesh) – have been allotted to Andhra Pradesh.

According to the data provided by the academy, 14 probationers have been allotted to Uttar Pradesh, while eight have been allocated to West Bengal and another seven to Maharashtra. The highest number of probationers have been allotted to Uttar Pradesh, while one each has been allotted to Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura.

Explaining the physical training imparted to them, Mr. Abhay said each one had to walk for 40 km with 10 kg load on their back and a five kg rifle in their hands. “The rigorous physical training also include 16 km run, apart from other outdoor activities,” he said. He added that only one probationer failed to complete the 16 km run and he had to finish it again.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Abhay said all the probationers have been trained on the challenges of cyber crime and other aspects of policing. He said the Dikshant Parade is the culmination of rigorous training. It comprises 42 weeks of basic training followed by district practical training in respective cadres for 28 weeks and 13 week phase-2 training at the academy. He added that the toppers of the batch, who hail from modest backgrounds, have overcome challenges successfully and have reached new heights.

Mr. Abhay said he expects more women to join the civil services in future given the changing mindset towards women.
