In a first-of-its-kind move, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to outsource the task of pothole filling and crack sealing to provide better road conditions and smooth ride for motorists in the city.

The contractors selected for the task will be on annual contract to ensure even and smooth conditions for roads assigned to them and keep the stretches free of potholes or cracks. To start with, the civic body has decided on initiating the outsourcing process on select circles for arterial and sub-arterial roads and plans to widen the scope based on the results.

The job of pothole filling has to be taken up mechanically using state-of-the-art filling machines and also take up the patch repairs with bituminous concrete after removing failed material, cleaning the surface apart from compacting and finishing for a smooth continuous surface.

According to civic body officials, selected agencies in a way will be made responsible for the upkeep of the road stretches and come up with a monitoring system to address the problems of potholes and road cracking.

“They will have to have a regular survey of road stretches and fix the problem whenever and wherever they came across bad spots,” said the official.

The GHMC Engineer-in-Chief R. Dhan Singh said the project is being taken up for select roads and will be expanded to cover all major road stretches of the city based on the response.

“This is being taken to provide better and pothole free stretches to road users which not only will help in better driving conditions but also avoid accidents,” he added.
