5 killed, four hurt in lightning

Lightning claimed five lives, while injuring four across the State on Sunday.

Lightning claimed two lives in separate incidents in the erstwhile composite Khammam district. D Tirumala Rao, 22, died near an agricultural field in Tummalapalli village in Konijerla mandal on Sunday evening.

The youth, an aspirant of Group-I services, came to his native village from Hyderabad just a few days ago to celebrate Dasara festival with his family members, sources said.

In Bhadradri-Kothagudem district, a 25-year-old woman was fatally struck at Choppala village in Karakagudem mandal late on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Sravanthi. She met with a tragic end while returning from a local stream after washing clothes with her mother.

Light to moderate rain lashed several parts of Kothagudem division and various other mandals in the district on Sunday.

In Adilabad, one woman was killed and two others were seriously injured when struck by lightning in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district when a spell of heavy rainfall lashed parts of it. The deceased, Kanaka Indubai, 51, and the injured -- Poyam Pachu and Vedma Dhrupadabai, and five others Adivasis were taking shelter under a tree when the incident took place.

According to Tiryani SI Pushpala Rama Rao, the incident took place outside Khairguda village in an agriculture field.

The injured have been shifted to Mancherial after initial treatment at Ginnedhar primary health centre.

In Siddipet, two persons were killed while another was injured. The incident took place at Chintalacheruvukatta under the limits of Two Town police station limits. According to police, P. Srinivas, 36, V. Balaraj, 34, and Ch. Saraiah took shelter under a tree while working in the field as it was heavily raining. Lightning killed Srinivas and Balaraj while seriously injuring Saraiah.

Two-Town Sub Inspector Kanakaiah rushed to the spot and shifted Saraiah to government hospital for treatment.

Additional DCP G Narasimha Reddy and Two Town Circle Inspector Anjaneyulu reached the spot.

Minister T. Harish Rao expressed deep shock over the incident and extended financial aid of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
