About half a dozen new municipalities are likely to be formed in the erstwhile district in the wake of the announcement made by the government on formation of about 40 additional municipalities before the local body elections.

The administration has already embarked on the exercise to explore the possibilities.

As per the government guidelines, towns with population of 15,000 and above would be made municipal councils. Villages and hamlets within the radius of five kilometres would be merged into the civic bodies. Given the parameters, Banswada and Yellareddy in Kamareddy district, Bheemgal, Balkonda and Perkit in Nizamabad district have fair chances of getting municipal council status.

Minister for Agriculture Pocharam Srinivas Reddy who is representing the Banswada Assembly constituency is all poised to recommend the town to be made a municipality. Bheemgal, the old taluq headquarters with a population of 15,000 as per the 2011 census, could also be considered a municipality. Balkonda could become a civic body given that its population is closer to the required figure, and if the nearby Kisannagar is merged, it would be another municipal town. Yellareddy, with population just over 13,000 could become yet another municipality provided nearby villages are merged. That apart, the limits of the municipal corporation of Nizamabad, old municipalities like Bodhan and Kamareddy would also expand if the surrounding villages are brought under their purview.
