For those going out this week in Noida, the god of death Yamraj himself will serve as a reminder not to drive rashly, especially if you plan on having a few drinks.

As part of its ongoing road safety week, from January 11 to 17, the Noida Police, with the help of the NGO Happy You, is using a volunteer dressed as Yamraj to put the fear of death into would-be traffic law-breakers.

The Yamraj volunteer, dressed in black, is deployed at busy intersections along with other volunteers of the NGO and police personnel. The volunteers can be seen holding up a banner that says: “You can argue with the traffic police, but not with Yamraj.”

Gautam Budh Nagar Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Rajiv Narayan Mishra said the road safety awareness programme is accompanied by an enforcement drive.

“We had observed traffic month in November to increase awareness and enforcement. Since then, the number of challans has come down for certain offences,” said Mr. Mishra.
