The 21-year-old woman, whom the police rescued within minutes of being set ablaze by her mother-in-law at the Akash farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri on Tuesday, had escaped a meticulous plan aimed at eliminating her, thanks to her quick thinking, the police said on Wednesday.

The victim, a resident of Champaran in Bihar, said that she was staying at the property with her family and her husband was employed as a gardener.

“On Tuesday, her husband left for work around 7:30 a.m. At 3 p.m., her mother-in-law asked her to switch on the water motor. As she entered the room to do so, her mother-in-law closed the door from outside and threw a burning matchstick inside sending her clothes up in flames,” a senior police officer said. The victim immediately rang up her husband who informed her father who then made a call to the PCR.
