An e-rickshaw driver was allegedly stabbed by three passengers on Sunday night for “getting stuck in traffic” while chasing a bike-borne phone snatcher in outer district’s Paschim Vihar, the police said on Tuesday.
Chunnu Mandal stays with his elder brother in Sonia Camp, they said. The accused youth stabbed the 25-year-old in the hip. The victim is undergoing treatment at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri and is said to be out of danger.
The police control room received a call at 10.30 p.m. on Sunday regarding the incident. A PCR van reached the spot and took an injured Chunnu to the hospital.
The victim allegedly told the police that he was returning home after dropping passengers when the accused boarded his e-rickshaw and asked him to follow a motorcycle. They told Chunnu that the biker had snatched their mobile phone, the police said.
“My e-rickshaw got stuck in a jam, which was impossible to avoid, but accused started abusing me. I told them that I was helpless, one of them got infuriated and stabbed me in the hip. I fell on the ground and they fled the spot,” the victim said.
A passer-by informed the police about the incident.
“I came to Delhi nearly six months ago in search of a job. After I failed to get a suitable job, I purchased an e-rickshaw on loan and started plying in the area. My elder brother is also an e-rickshaw driver,” added the victim.
3 days, no arrest
Chunnu said the police have not yet traced the accused even three days after the incident.
“A case under Indian Penal Code Section 324 [voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means] has been registered at Paschim Vihar police station. The case is under investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Seju P. Kuruvilla.
