Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Satyendra Jain said on Saturday that plans are afoot to make subways and foot-over bridges pedestrian-friendly.
Speaking in the presence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the latter’s residence here on Saturday, Mr. Jain said the government was in favour of reducing the average height of subways, making footpaths more accessible in addition to disabled-friendly, and installing glass lifts as opposed to normal lifts and escalators. “We have noticed that escalators and normal lifts have many maintenance issues; a sizeable number of both installed at FOBs across several locations in Delhi have been found either to be defunct or very hard to maintain,” Mr. Jain said.
“While the government is of the view that the ones that already have these installed should be kept running for as long as possible, we have decided to go for glass lifts for the new ones which we propose to construct as part of our initiative to make Delhi more pedestrian-friendly,” he added.
Mr. Jain said efforts were afoot to reduce the height of footpaths, which he said were found to be twice the recommended height of 150 m.m.
