Along the lines of the Kisan Mukti March, student unions from across the country are planning to launch a Chattra Yuva Adhikar March in February to protest against the Modi government’s lack of consideration of student issues.
More than 20 students’ unions from across the country such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union and Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences students’ union will participate in the national campaign to be mobilised on February 7.
The organisers will protest the Centre’s “real anti-academic character” claiming that the “failure to fulfil his promise of job creation or even fill existing vacancies is one of the biggest political issues against this government”. The campaign will be launched on December 28 at the Press Club of India where they will convey their demands in a ‘student charter’.
Their primary demands include filling up of vacant government jobs, creation of 100 new central universities with guaranteed hostels and scholarships for all applicants, the establishment of just anti-sexual harassment cells and an end to saffronisation, ensuring freedom of expression within campuses. “We will try to make our campaign easily comprehensible and appealing to the maximum number of students and youth in this country,” JNUSU president N. Sai Balaji said.
