Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday ordered deployment of at least two women sub-inspectors and seven lady constables in every police station across the Capital, besides asking the Delhi Police to launch a special drive to recruit women in the force.

“I have signed the file for appointing two woman sub-inspectors and seven woman constables in every police station in Delhi. The Delhi Police will soon launch a special drive for recruiting female constables and officers… we will appoint more women personnel in police stations to instil confidence in women,” Mr. Shinde told journalists here.

Delhi has around 166 police stations and strength of 80,000 personnel, with around 7,000 women cops. After the recent gang-rape incident and public outcry, the Home Ministry announced several measures to address women safety issues.

Apart from appointing Justice J. S. Verma Committee and Justice Usha Mehra Commission to look into the needs of legal and police reforms to deal with sexual assault cases, a task force has also been set up for fortnightly review of women safety issues in the Capital. It is learnt that the first batch of 2,000 new recruitments would soon be approved by the Union Home Ministry for induction into the force.
