The Delhi Government Transport Department and the Delhi Police began the Road Safety Week with various initiatives organised across the Capital on Sunday. Similar events will continue till January 17.

The Transport Department took to the air waves through a jingle on road safety in addition to formally launching a media campaign giving the message of responsible driving. The police held a citizens’ meet at India Gate.

“Every day many lives are lost and people become disabled due to road accidents. It affects entire families. But the tragedy can be prevented by spreading awareness about various aspects of road safety,” said a senior Transport Department official.

“Small steps like respecting traffic rules can go a long way in saving precious lives. We have decided to intensify the awareness campaign to make Delhiites more cognizant about traffic rules,” the official added.

The Department has initiated a multi-pronged campaign for people from all walks of life. Its enforcement teams will be present at various locations along with civil defence volunteers of the district administration to sensitise people about traffic rules.

For maximum reach, a media campaign has been rolled out simultaneously in print, radio, outdoor and on social media platforms. “Kapil Sharma of Comedy Nights show has agreed to be the campaign’s Goodwill Ambassador. The advertisements will address the audience in a humorous tone and motivate them not to become a ‘ghanchakkar’ on road and avoid causing traffic hazards,” said the official.

“The campaign will focus on issues such as drunk driving, honking, using zebra crossing, slow driving near schools and colleges, wearing seat belts and helmets. Along with the print ads, banners and standies will be displayed in all DC offices to disseminate the message,” the official added.

The Transport Department will now be more accessible to the public over Facebook and address their individual concerns in a more systematic manner.
