Delhi Police on Thursday suspended a constable for allegedly shoving off a 66-year-old man during an argument with his son which resulted in his death.
Constable Vikram Singh has been suspended pending inquiry, Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said.
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has initiated a probe into the incident which took place on Tuesday night in Dhaula Kuan in which the elderly man Anil Kumar, who was returning home with his 32-year-old son, died.
“The probe is underway. We will take strict action,” Mr. Gupta said.
Meanwhile, a three-member medical board conducted post mortem of Kumar. Following the incident, police had on Wednesday handed over the investigations to Crime Branch.
The deceased was travelling in a car with his son Mohit Arora, both residents of Geeta Colony in east Delhi, when the incident took place on Tuesday night in Delhi Cantonment area.
According to the victim’s family, Mohit and his father were in a car while his brother was in another vehicle which developed some technical problems.
“Mohit stopped the car and approached a policeman for getting some water. The constable was on phone and he ignored the request. Mohit then fetched water on his own from a nearby place and was returning to his car when the constable approached him and dragged him to a police post alleging that he had abused the policeman.
“Seeing this, the father came out and asked the constable what happened. The Constable then pushed the father. He fell down and became unconscious,” a family member said.
The elderly man was rushed to Safdarjung hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Mohit said, “My father came running after me. The constable did not wait even for a minute. He took me to the police station and then misbehaved with me.”
“The constable also misbehaved with my father when he came. He did not listen to anyone. He was continuously blaming us that we caught hold of him and disrespected him,” Mohit said.
