A 66-year-old man died after he was allegedly pushed back hard by a Delhi Police constable inside a police post in the Delhi Cantonment area late on Tuesday night following a minor altercation.
A case has been registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide) in this connection and the investigation handed over to the Crime Branch. The magistrate concerned has also been requested to conduct further proceedings under Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Trivial issue
Thirty-two-year-old Mohit, who runs a fitness centre in Geeta Colony, was returning from the ring ceremony of his cousin sister in Dwarka along with his father Anil Arora, mother, wife Monika and six-month-old son around midnight when he stopped his car near the Dhaula Kuan prepaid taxi booth and stepped out to replenish a water bottle.
He walked up to a Delhi Police constable talking on the mobile phone to enquire where he could get drinking water. According to the First Information Report, Mohit enquired from the constable three times, but did not get a reply. A passer-by then told Mohit that he could get drinking water at the nearby police post. While Mohit was walking towards the police post, the constable, later identified as Vikram, came from behind and allegedly held him by the collar. When Mr. Arora saw Mohit and the constable walking towards the police post, he also came out of the car suspecting that something was amiss and followed them.
On reaching the police post, the constable allegedly told the duty officer that Mohit had misbehaved with him and held him by the collar. An argument ensued between them. When Mr. Arora tried to intervene, constable Vikram allegedly pushed him back asking him to remain seated. But the elderly man lost his balance, fell down and passed out. Mohit and some policemen made the elderly man lie on the chair and tried to revive him by rubbing his palms. When Mr. Arora did not respond, Mohit took him to Safdarjung Hospital in his car accompanied by a police constable. The man was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Sonu, one of Aroras' neighbours, said: “Mr. Arora was a thorough gentleman. He helped Mohit in running his fitness centre after his retirement. His death has come as a rude shock to his family and neighbours.”
