Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay on Friday told the party office-bearers in the municipal corporations that their performance is being monitored directly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The development comes amid the political slugfest between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party over the cleanliness drive in the city.
“The Prime Minister and other Ministers are watching the municipal corporations. The obligatory functions of the civic bodies, including sanitation, need to be fulfilled,” said Mr. Upadhyay.
He was speaking at the Civic Centre after election of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Standing Committee chairperson, which Subhash Arya won unopposed. Congratulating Mr. Arya, Mr. Upadhyay said there were big challenges in store for the civic bodies.
“Public toilets, parks, garbage dumps, etc., need to look clean,” said Mr. Upadhyay, adding that the working style of the corporation needed to be changed completely.
Mr. Arya, the former SDMC Leader of the House, said he appreciated the responsibility given to him by the BJP. “Improving cleanliness is at the top of my agenda. We will come up with new ways to ensure better services,” said Mr. Arya.
The Centre’s Swachh Bharat campaign was launched on October 2 and aims to clean the country by 2019. The three municipal corporations of the Capital have been involved in the campaign as their primary job is sanitation.
