A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 67-year-old woman in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas on April 23, the police said on Tuesday.
DCP (South) Romil Baaniya said the accused, Sunny Thakur, a Badarpur resident, is from Bihar. The police said Sunny worked as a plumber and did odd jobs in the area where victim Usha Kumar lived with her family.
Main door open
Sunny allegedly entered Usha’s home around 12.30 p.m. on April 23 after he saw the main gate was open and tried to snatch the jewellery she was wearing. When she resisted, he tried to strangulate her with a rope, they said.
“Sunny later attacked Usha with dumb-bells and slit her throat with a kitchen knife before fleeing with her jewellery,” said Mr. Baaniya.
CCTV camera footage for April 23 was scanned as part of investigation and several people were questioned.
“The accused had an injury mark on the arm, which made us suspicious. Also, his version of events did not match the digital evidence,” said a senior police officer. After sustained questioning, he allegedly confessed to the murder. The police claimed to have recovered jewellery and some foreign currency notes from Sunny.
