Parents of the 21-year-old nursing student, who committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room at AIIMS on Sunday night, claimed and cremated the body on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim’s, Pallavi Grover’s, family had on Monday refused to take the body demanding that AIIMS terminate the service of the nursing hostel deputy superintendent Shashi Mawar, who according to them, had harassed the girl to “the point of breakdown”.
“A post-mortem was conducted and the body was given to us while the police are yet to register a first information report,” said the victim’s brother Lucky Grover.
Pallavi, a third-year B.Sc. (Hons) nursing student at the Institute was found dead around 10-30 p.m. and a suicide note was also retrieved from her room.
The AIIMS had constituted a nine-member inquiry committee to look into the matter and has suspended Ms. Shashi Mawar.
AIIMS spokesperson Dr. Neerja Bhatla said: “The committee, headed by AIIMS dean Dr. P. K. Julka, will investigate the matter and submit the report at the earliest.”
“Pallavi was repeatedly harassed by the hostel superintendent and another nurse at NS-4 against whom my sister had complained several times. Despite that no action was taken. Today she is no more and all we want is that no other student is made to suffer,” added Lucky.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath said: “We are pursuing the proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC.” However, no case related to abetment of suicide has been registered in the incident as yet.
