AIIMS nursing student ends life, parents cry foul

A 21-year-old nursing student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room on Sunday allegedly after persistent harassment by the Nursing Hostel deputy superintendent.

Co-hostellers found the body and alerted the Hospital authorities who then called the police and informed the parents about the incident. The police have confirmed that they have found a note – where she was living alone – which states that ‘no one is responsible for her death.’

Prem Grover, father of the deceased – Pallavi Grover from Mayapuri and a third year B.Sc Nursing student – said, “My child had been complaining about harassment by her warden who was constantly taunting her and even challenged her to clear her practical exam which she had failed by three marks.”

The family is demanding that the warden’s service be terminated immediately and that she be arrested.

“We refuse to accept the body till action is taken against the warden,” said Mr. Prem.

Shocked classmates and other students held a protest outside the AIIMS director Dr. M. C. Misra’s residence on Monday along with Pallavi’s parents.

Her classmate said, “Pallavi had returned from her home on Sunday night. And she did not meet anyone, which she usually did. By around 10-30 p.m. one of the girl’s got a call from her mother saying that Pallavi wasn’t picking her calls. The girls then went to her room and found the door locked. When they looked through the window they found Pallavi’s body hanging.” Meanwhile authorities have constituted a nine-member enquiry panelto look into the incident. .
