Naik Sandeep, 33, who was injured in a gun battle with terrorists a week ago in Jammu and Kashmir, succumbed to injuries at Srinagar’s Army Hospital on Tuesday. He was a resident of Atali village here.

Injured on birthday

Sandeep of 10 Para Commando was injured on his birthday on February 12 at Ratnipura, two days before the deadly terror attack on Central Reserve Police Force convoy in Pulwama claiming 40 lives.

He is survived by his wife Geeta, six-year-old daughter Lavanya and two-year-old twins Rakshit and Rashit.

Sandeep had sustained four bullet injuries and died during treatment on Tuesday around noon, said his younger brother Sonu.

Last rites

Sandeep’s parents and wife were with him at the time of his death. “They are all expected to return to the village on Wednesday around noon. The last rites will be performed around 1.30 p.m.,” said Sonu.

Atali Sarpanch Prahlad said the Sub-Divisional Magistrate had called him to inform them about the death of Sandeep and asked him to make arrangements for his last rites.

Sonu said Sandeep had joined the force in 2005.

He said that his brother always wanted to serve his country and joined the Army following the footsteps of a host of their relatives.

He was expected to return home later this month, but was injured just days before that.

He had been posted in Jammu and Kashmir a couple of times earlier as well during his over 14-year service. He was most recently sent there a year ago.
