A 51-year-old foreign national was killed and three others were grievously injured after being hit by a luxury car allegedly driven by a nephew of late businessman Ponty Chadha, the police said on Monday.

The police said the incident was reported at 1.45 p.m. when a speeding luxury car being driven by Asees Chadha, 19, son of Rajinder Singh Chadha, hit an autorickshaw from behind at Vinay Marg in Chanakyapuri. Three women and an autorickshaw driver in the vehicle were injured and taken to AIIMS.

After hitting the autorickshaw, the overspeeding car ran over the footpath and hit an electricity pole before coming to a halt. An eyewitness said the autorickshaw flung into air and skid around 30 metres before coming to a halt. The car driver tried to flee but he hit the electricity pole and could not escape. The car cost around ₹4.4 crore.

A Punjab police team in a car, escorting Asees Chadha, rescued him after locals gathered at the spot.

DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said after receiving information about the accident, a team was rushed to the spot.

He said the injured persons — Alma Gul Atayeba (33), Gulshat Alijanova (51) and Gulia Yyam (55), all Turkmenistan nationals and Raghubir Singh (autorickshaw driver), a resident of Sangam Vihar, were rushed to the hospital where Gulshat Alijanova succumbed during treatment.

FIR registered

“The injured persons are undergoing treatment as they have received multiple injuries and are stated to be critical,” said Mr. Verma.

“We have registered an FIR under IPC Section 279 [rash driving] and 304 [punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder] at Chanakyapuri police station,” he said.

He added that during investigation, the accused, a resident of Chhatarpur farm in Mehrauli was arrested. The case is under investigation. However, the car was found to be registered under the name of Wave Distilleries and Breweries Limited.
