All electricity meters in Lutyens’ Delhi would be converted to “smart meters” in an attempt to modernise power supply, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) said on Friday.

In a statement, the NDMC said it had assigned the work of replacing 100% of its conventional meters with advanced smart electricity meters to Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), and that it was a joint venture of Power Ministry public sector undertakings.

With the work of converting about 80,000 meters, expected to be completed by October 2, the NDMC would become the first power distributor to switch completely from conventional to smart meters.

The civic body signed a memorandum of understanding with EESL on Friday.

NDMC chairperson Naresh Kumar said that the smart meters would lead to efficient and accurate billing, reduction in operational expenses and distribution losses, effective load and demand forecasting and greater stability for the system.

In addition, consumers would get detailed information about their consumption that would help them save energy.
