At the age of 34, Karawal Nagar MLA Kapil Mishra became one of the youngest Ministers in the Arvind Kejriwal Cabinet after he took oath on Monday.
Mr. Mishra was also promoted from Delhi Jal Board Vice-Chairperson to Chairperson. In another first, this is the first time a Minister had got a job traditionally given to the Chief Minister.
You take over the law portfolio from Jitender Tomar, who has been dogged by controversy. What’s your take on the issue? What are your plans for the Department?
We are keeping an eye on the political developments. These issues are personal and political. They are not related to the Department’s functioning. My aim is to work towards setting up more fast track courts so we can ensure speedy justice. Improving legal awareness and access to legal aid for the poor will be of utmost importance. There are so many people who need help, but don’t even know how to go about the legal process.
What are your priorities for the Capital’s Tourism Department?
Delhi is an international tourist destination, but lacks international standard spots. For instance, we had such great weather on Sunday, but everyone went to India Gate. We should have more locations for people to enjoy themselves. Apart from boosting the economy, it will also generate employment.
What are your aims for the Arvind Kejriwal-led government?
The goal of Mr. Kejriwal, [his Deputy] Manish Sisodia and the rest of us is to make Delhi a world class city. We have a mission to achieve. Being a part of the Arvind Kejriwal Cabinet is a matter of pride for me. The activist in me will be even more active now. As the DJB chairperson, I will continue to work towards expanding the piped water network. We aim to have the entire city in the piped network in two years.
