Union Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary said on Friday that “small crime incidents” in the Capital hog national limelight because of an active media presence.
The minister said this while he was inaugurating the South Avenue police station, Delhi Police’s 162nd and newest territorial police station.
He further claimed that the crime rate was low in Delhi compared to the large population that the city-state is home to.
He also credited his government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for more registrations, something Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi has also attributed the higher crime rates to.
“But since Delhi is the capital and media is very active here, small incidents get the headlines,” said Mr. Chaudhary while inaugurating the police station in the high—security South Avenue area here.
He added that Delhi also had people coming in from NCR areas like Faridabad, Noida and Gurgaon on a regular basis.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Mr. Bassi, too, attended the inauguration of the police station. The new station will have high profile buildings such as Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Vice President’s house, Vigyan Bhavan and other vital installations under its jurisdiction.
Talking about the need for a separate police station for such a small area, Mr. Bassi said that even though not a large number of people resided there, around three to four lakh government officials worked at several important offices, he said.
“Though the area of jurisdiction is not very large, the magnitude of the problems here are not less than any other city area,” he said.
