MCD engineers' strike in support of colleague to continue

Published - February 10, 2012 11:40 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The engineers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will continue their strike against the recent attack on one of the executive engineers of the civic body. The engineers association had announced an indefinite strike on Wednesday, protesting against the attack and demanding better security for MCD personnel.

On Thursday, Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra said the civic body would bear the medical expenses of executive engineer Ansar Alam, who was allegedly beaten up by two unidentified youth on Tuesday, and is presently recuperating in a hospital. It has been alleged that the land mafia was behind the attack as Mr. Alam was involved in action against illegal construction in the city.

‘Serious issue'

Mr. Mehra said it was a “serious issue” and that he had discussed it with the Delhi Police Commissioner. He said the MCD would secure the safety of its employees. “The MCD is in touch with the Delhi Police and will cooperate in the investigation,” he said. He added that MCD would also ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future.

The engineers association, however, continued its protest at the Ambedkar Stadium office of the MCD. A civic body official condemned the police saying that they were trying to shield the real culprits and were hand in glove with the builders' mafia.
