A man was arrested by the Crime Branch on November 27 for allegedly manufacturing and selling illegal firearms, the police said on Monday.
The accused was manufacturing arms at his residence in east Delhi, they said.
DCP (Crime Branch) Dr. Ram Gopal Naik said Iqbal, from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, was arrested following a tip-off from Anand Vihar. On his instance, the police have arrested one Raj Kartik on December 1.
Iqbal had allegedly sold a pistol to Kartik, they added.
‘Learnt from father’
Mr. Naik said that during interrogation, Iqbal allegedly told the police that his father used to manufacture illegal arms at home in UP and he learnt the technique from him.
“In 1996-97, he started working at an arms shop in his village and learnt how to repair sophisticated arms. In 2000, he shifted to east Delhi and got in touch with criminals and eventually started manufacturing pistols and carbines at his house after procuring raw material from local market,” the officer said.
In 2014, Iqbal was nabbed and sent to jail where he met several criminals who later bought arms from him after his release.
“He has supplied more than 25 carbines, 50 semi-automatic pistols and over 100 countrymade pistols to criminals in Delhi-NRC,” Mr. Naik said.
His factory in Karwal Nagar was raided from where three countrymade pistols along with six live rounds and two used rounds along with raw materials including springs, barrels, magazines, several unfinished and semi-finished firearms and instruments used in the manufacturing of pistols and carbines were recovered, the officer added.
Iqbal allegedly told the police that he had sold a pistol to Kartik for ₹40,000.
Kartik has nine criminal cases including armed dacoity, murder, and attempt to murder, the police said, adding that he is a member of Rohit Chaudhary gang.
The police claim to have recovered a semi-automatic carbine, five pistols, magazines and raw material.
