A 26-year-old fashion designer is battling for life after a former employee of her family attacked her with a knife outside her residence in Malviya Nagar on Sunday afternoon.

Accused Anil had been hired as driver by the victim’s family last year. However, he was fired within 10 days. Though he is yet to be arrested, the police claim to have “significant” clues about his whereabouts.

According to the victim’s family, Anil had “behavioural issues” because of which his services were discontinued in April last year. He resurfaced to commit the “well-planned attack”, they said.

Victim rushed to hospital

A senior police officer said a PCR call was received at 2 p.m. about Kaveri having been attacked with a knife in a parking lot at Shivalik Apartments.

A neighbour, who is also an eyewitness, alerted the police. By the time a police team reached the spot, the victim had been rushed to Max Hospital in Saket.

Kaveri’s mother Rekha said Anil had rung the bell to their second floor apartment around 1.30 p.m. on Sunday. “It took me a while to recognise him as he was wearing a cap. But I figured that he was the person we had fired last year. I opened the door and asked why he was here. To this, he said he had started working with another family in the area. He then asked me to move our car as it was blocking his employer’s vehicle,” said Ms. Rekha, who decided to go downstairs to move the car. However, Kaveri went to move the car instead.

Case registered

Eyewitness Akshay said, “I was at some distance when I witnessed a scuffle at a vacant plot where the residents park their cars. Kaveri was on the driver’s seat and Anil, who was seated next to her, was attacking her with a knife. He had almost slit her throat when two children, who were on their way to tuition classes, raised an alarm. Anil then fled the spot,” said Mr. Akshay.

The police said they have procured CCTV footage from the area, which shows the attacker’s face clearly.

“An FIR under Section 307 [attempt to murder] of the IPC has been registered against the accused. We have got significant clues about his whereabouts,” said Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal.
