A day after two gangrape cases rattled the Capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal blamed the Centre and the police for the lawlessness in the city. Talking to the media after meeting Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, Mr. Kejriwal said his government will not let Prime Minister Narendra Modi sleep peacefully till the women aren’t safe.

“I am not Sheila Dikshit who will remain silent. We will not allow Mr. Modi to sleep peacefully till women in the capital aren’t safe,” Kejriwal said after his meeting with the L-G on Sunday to discuss the women safety issue.

Describing the situation as ‘jungle raj’ in the city, the CM said that since Mr. Modi was busy the police department should be handed over to the Delhi Government. Control over police has been a longstanding issue between the State and the Centre. Calling it an ego issue for the PM, Mr Kejriwal challenged that his government would bring down crime rate within a year if the police was brought under him. He added that if not the entire city, policing in Trans-Yamuna area should be handed over to the State government and the Centre can keep the “VIP area”.

Ab zidd chodiye and give the police to us for a year. Just as we brought down corruption, in the same way cases of crime against women will drop,” Mr Kejriwal said.

During his meeting with the L-G, the CM went armed with the figures of last four years of cases relating to crime against women and missing children. He said of the 31,000 cases of crime against women, chargesheet was filed in only 13,000 cases. The Delhi government has called an ‘emergency’ Cabinet meeting on Monday to brainstorm and implement some women safety measures. “A special session on women safety will be soon held,” said a source. In August, the government held a similar Assembly session and apart from the announcement of installing CCTVs nothing much was done. Two days back, the PWD was asked to identify dark spots in the city so that the government could initiate the CCTV project. However, on Friday, PWD minister Satyendra Jain at a press conference said that it will take, at least, a month’s time for the civic agency to come up with a detailed plan on the CCTVs.
