The police have apprehended two boys in connection with the rape of a toddler in West Delhi. The gruesome crime led to widespread protests across the Capital.
The boys, aged 16 and 17, lived in the same locality as the victim and at least one of them was known to her.
According to the police, the duo abducted and sexually abused her soon after a power failure in the locality in Nangloi. “While one of them is a Class XII student at a local government school, the other is a Class VIII drop-out and was doing odd jobs,” said Dependra Pathak, Joint Commissioner of Police (South-Western Range).
The boys were nabbed from the locality on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The officer said that the two-and-a-half-year-old victim’s condition was stable and would be discharged from Sanjay Gandhi Hospital before Monday afternoon. “The child has had milk and food. She was also seen playing,” said Mr. Pathak.
About the five-year-old victim in the other rape case of Anand Vihar in East Delhi, he said she too was recovering and would be discharged soon.
The furore caused by the incident had forced the police to rope in much of its resources. Under the supervision of Monika Bhardwaj, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), 18 teams were formed.
“Over 250 suspects were rounded up. The needle of suspicion fell on the two after they were found missing for sometime. They have admitted to their guilt,” said Pushpendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).
