Head of Gujarat-based gang held

May 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - New Delhi:

A 48-year-old resident of Gujarat, who was allegedly the head of a gang of criminals, was arrested for committing two armed robberies in East Delhi.

Identified as Bharat Bhai Shodasa, the accused led a gang of six and even had a team of Ahmedabad-based lawyers on its payroll, said Ajay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

“Two recent cases, in which cash and jewellery worth Rs. 1.5 crore was robbed by the Bharat’s gang, have been solved with his arrest,” said Mr. Kumar.

On October 9, 2014, Himmat Bafna visited a private bank in Preet Vihar. Bafna had taken diamonds and other jewellery worth more than Rs. 1.5 crore from his locker and was on his way home when he was robbed by two armed bikers.

On November 18 last year, Jaiveer Singh, a supervisor with a company at Patparganj, was robbed while he was returning from the same bank in Preet Vihar after encashing a cheque for Rs. 3,53,400.

“CCTV footage showed some faces were commonly seen in and around the crime scene. Six suspects and three motorcycles were ascertained to have been involved in both the robberies,” said Mr. Kumar.

“When we checked our criminal dossier archive, we found that a gang from Ahmedabad had been arrested for similar incidents in 2013,” Mr. Kumar said.

The Delhi Police then touched base with their counterparts in Ahmedabad, who in early May informed them that Bharat had been identified.

A team was dispatched to Ahmedabad, which with assistance from the Gujarat Police nabbed Bharat.
