Demanded ransom of ₹4 lakh, later reduced it to ₹50,000

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a youth from Jama Masjid metro station, the police said on Tuesday.

DCP (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa, said the 18-year-old youth had gone missing on July 25. His mother, who claims to have received a call wherein a man was demanding ₹4 lakh for releasing Suraj, filed a complaint on Sunday (July 28) in Jama Masjid police station.

“Suraj’s mother said she received ransom calls on her son’s mobile phone, which was at home. The kidnappers also gave the details of a bank account for depositing the money,” said the DCP.

The complainant said the kidnappers had reduced their demand to ₹50,000. The accused — Rajeev Kumar (19) Chandan (21) Sikander (20) and Rahul (19) — from Delhi’s Rajokari village were working for an online food supplying company in Gurgram’s Sector 23.

“An FIR under Section 364 of IPC was registered at Jamia Masjid police station and investigation was taken up,” said the DCP. The accused were traced using the mobile number from which they made the ransom call. They were nabbed from Rajokari village here and Suraj was rescued, the police added.

During interrogation, Rajeev said he had known the victim as they both worked in the same shoe company earlier. He added that they used to keep in touch and recently, when he got to know that the victim had earned a lot of money and was staying in Delhi with his family, he hatched a conspiracy to kidnap him.

“The police have recovered the mobile phone and a car used in the commission of the crime,” the DCP added.
