The Election Commission of India filed a complaint with the Delhi Police on Friday regarding a WhatsApp message about online voting by NRIs in Lok Sabha elections, which they clarified was fake.

The ECI has asked the police to register an FIR.

In the complaint, the ECI wrote that the fake news is being circulated on the messaging app.

DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said: “Legal action will be taken according to the content of the complaint or the case will be sent to Cyber Cell for further investigation.”

‘With ECI logo’

The complaint read: “This fake news contains the ECI logo. The publication of such fake news is causing severe confusion thereby creating public nuisance and mischief.”

The WhatsApp forward contains a website link with the text: “Those who hold Indian Passport, can now vote online for 2019 elections. Please register yourself… There is a link Enroll as NRI voter”. The ECI stated that it has also asked WhatsApp and Twitter to remove the fake news.
