A 24-year-old man who was convicted in an extortion case and jumped parole has been arrested for allegedly committing dacoity with his accomplices in Lahori Gate in March, the police said on Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ram Gopal Naik said that the accused has been identified as Ashish alias Anoop, a resident of Bahadurgarh.
The police said that around 3.30 p.m. on March 6 , the accused and three of his accomplices entered the office of a grain merchant where the merchant and his son were present. The accused locked the door and demanded money from the victims, who handed them ₹15,000. The accused, however, took ₹1.5lakh from an almirah in the office. The accused allegedly also robbed them of their mobile phones and cut the landline wires. “When the son objected and demanded their phones back, the accused pulled out pistols and opened fire. They then fled the spot with the robbed money,” Mr. Naik said.
During investigation, CCTV footage of the incident was examined and the accused were identified. Acting on a tip-off that the accused would be coming to Sarai Kale Khan, a trap was laid and Ashish was arrested.
During interrogation, the police said that it was revealed that after his father’s murder in 2001, the accused started committing crimes. He said he and two of his accomplices demanded ₹1 crore in 2015 from a rice merchant in Bahadurgarh who reported the matter to the police. The accused was sentenced in jail for five years in the case in 2018. “He was out on parole, but jumped it and committed the crime in March with the men he had met in jail,” the officer said.
