Former Delhi University professor S.A.R. Geelani, who was arrested and later acquitted by the Supreme Court in connection with Parliament attack case, died here on Thursday following a cardiac arrest, his family said.

“He passed away on Thursday evening due to cardiac arrest,” a family member confirmed.

Geelani, who used to teach Arabic language at Delhi University’s Zakir Hussain College, is survived by wife and two daughters.

Collapsed at gym

A senior police officer confirmed the death of Geelani at his house in Jamia Nagar. “A police team was sent to his (Geelani) house where family members confirmed his death. He took his last breath around 5.30 p.m.,” said the officer.

The police said that Geelani was at the gym in Nehru Place when he complained of chest pain. He was rushed to a hospital by his personal security officer and staff of the gym. He was declared brought dead.

The police have procured CCTV footage from the gym where he collapsed.
