A 28-year-old man was injured after his car hit an electric pole on Baba Kharak Singh Marg in the early hours of Sunday.
The police said the incident happened around 2 a.m. when a speeding car coming from Connaught Place crashed after losing control.
Driver trapped
According to an eyewitness, two other occupants from the car fled after the collision but the driver got trapped behind the steering wheel.
“The driver lost control after taking a turn on Baba Kharak Singh Marg from Gol Dak Khana post office circle. The car ultimately stopped after hitting an electric pole. I was awakened by the sound of the crash. By the time I ran to help, two occupants managed to flee while the driver was rescued by me and a few others. Fortunately, no one was hit by the speeding car,” said the eyewitness, who was sleeping at a makeshift shop near the accident spot.
The car driver sustained injuries on the shoulder and legs, and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Blood alcohol level
The police suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and are awaiting a report on his blood alcohol level.
Meanwhile, the driver has been charged under Section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
“We are also scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed nearby to ascertain more facts in the case. The vehicle was removed from the road within an hour of the accident with the help of a crane. No traffic disruption was reported,” said a senior police officer.
