The Capital has recorded over 40% of total crime reported across 19 metropolitan cities in the county, read data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

It also showed that Delhi recorded a 40.4% share of total Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes registered in 19 cities in 2017 with Bengaluru taking the second position at 8.9% followed by Mumbai at 7.4%. The population of Delhi is 163.1 lakh while Mumbai’s is 184.1 lakh, it said.
In the Capital, crimes increased by 6.87% with 2,13,141 cases registered in 2017 as compared to 2016 which had 1,99,445 cases.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajan Bhagat said, “In Delhi, there is a facility to register First Information Reports online in cases of motor vehicle theft and other thefts, which may have increased the number of crime cases under these heads. This makes it statistically non-comparable with other cities where online registration is not available.”
In 2017, Delhi recorded 400 murder cases followed by Bengaluru with 235 such cases and Patna with 183. In violent crimes, 2,838 cases of robbery and 32 of dacoity were registered, the data stated.
Delhi also remained ahead of all other metropolitans in crime against women. The data states that 102 women lost their lives in dowry deaths.
Other cases related to women shows 472 cases of stalking, 1,168 of rape, 11 of attempt to rape, 2,548 of outraging a woman’s modesty along with 892 cases of assault on women, 613 sexual harassment cases and 25 sexual harassment cases at workplace were registered. In reported cases of rape, second to Delhi is Mumbai which registered 287 cases. The data shows that 2,902 people died in 2,634 road accidents in the Capital. According to the data, no cases of rioting over communal or religious issues and caste conflict were reported in Delhi in 2017.
