With about 18,000 cases pending, the Delhi government said on Monday that it was in the process of pushing for more consumer courts and coming up with a strategy to tackle the backlog.

Plan formulated

As per a statement, Consumer Affairs Minister Imran Hussain asked officials to work towards setting up one consumer court in each district as well as formulating a plan to deal with pending cases when he reviewed the functioning of the department on Monday.

In order to make the Delhi State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission’s functioning better, the department and the president of the commission, Justice Veena Birbal, are in the process of identifying sites for four Benches.

Consumer Affairs

Consumer Affairs Department officials said sites had been identified at Nigam Bhawan in Kashmere Gate and Vikas Bhawan-II.

Work on finalising these new sites is on, officials added.

The government is also in the process of making sure all 11 districts of Delhi have a consumer court.

Currently, there are 10 consumer courts.

While the South-West District Forum operates from the South district one, Shahdara district’s consumer forum is yet to be set up. Mr. Hussain directed officials to expedite the setting up of the Shahdara forum at the Karkardooma Courts Complex.

6,000 new cases a year

According to the statement, about 6,000 new cases are lodged every years with the commission and district forums, which dispose of about 7,000 cases annually.

But, there are about 18,000 cases still pending, the statement said.

The Consumer Affairs Department was in the process of drafting a proposal for addressing the pending cases within one year using additional resources.
