The municipal corporations here have declared various measures being undertaken to reduce the use of plastic in its jurisdictions, on Thursday.
At a meeting of the standing committee, the commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal corporation, Varsha Joshi said that 155 buildings in its jurisdiction had been declared “plastic-free zones.” Boards declaring the same would soon be put up at these sites, she said, adding that these boards and advertisements erected by the corporation will be made out of environment-friendly material and not flex.
Besides this, single-use plastic won’t be allowed to use at events held at the civic body’s community halls. A change in the application have been made in this regard, she said. The North DMC will soon tie up with NGOs to produce bags made out of used clothes to be distributed in place of plastic bags. It also plans to organise “plogging” events in Delhi University to involve young people in the anti-plastic drive.
The SDMC on its part said that it had identified 40 sites, 10 in each of its four zones for the collection and disposal of plastic waste. Citizens are being informed of the ban on single-use plastic through information campaigns as well. To assist the disposal of such material, the civic body is also making arrangements for bulk collection of plastic waste, it said. Apart from this, in its efforts to confiscate polythene bags, it has collected up to 3,554 kgs of plastic bags and issued fines worth ₹3.18 lakh.
