Delhi’s municipal bodies continue to lag behind

Ranks up from 2015, but long way to go

The municipal corporations of Delhi remain among the worst performers in the country when it comes to sanitation. This, even as their rankings this year have improved compared to 2015.

The Swachh Survekshan-2017 has put the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation at 196, 202 and 279 ranks respectively out of 434 cities and municipalities. Last year, of the 73 municipalities surveyed, the SDMC had ranked 39. The other two corporations were not included in the survey. In 2015, the civic bodies were ranked together at 398 out of 476 cities surveyed.

Hit by financial crisis

The EDMC and the North Corporation have struggled in the face of a financial crisis. However, a top EDMC official said that despite lack of funds and strikes by sanitation workers, the civic body had managed to improve and do better than it’s richer south Delhi counterpart.

The North Corporation, meanwhile, has launched a waste-to-energy plant at Narela-Bawana, while the EDMC has taken measures to reduce garbage at the Ghazipur landfill, and the SDMC has started door-to-door collection of garbage in some parts. However, segregation of garbage and disposal remains a challenge.
