A 32-year-old software engineer allegedly stabbed his wife before hanging himself at their Platinum Heights residence in Dwarka Sector 18 on Sunday. The couple had been married for just two months.

Police said the couple, Amit Bachchan and Shivani Patni, had got into an argument before the incident took place.

In her statement, Ms. Patni told the police that the incident was the result of a marital discord.

However, the Bachchan family suspect foul play. “Ms. Patni made the call to the police control room. She told us that she was lying injured inside her flat after her husband inflicted grievous injuries,” said a senior police officer.

Before the police team could reach her house, Ms. Patni, who was bleeding, dropped a flower pot from the eighth floor flat to attract a security guard’s attention. Police said the guard, too, had made a call to the PCR.

“Amit was found lying on the floor of the drawing room with a cable tied around his neck,” said the police officer. They suspect that Mr. Bachchan’s body weight may have pulled him down to the floor. However, the ceiling fan wasn’t damaged or bent.

The police said even though prima facie it appeared to be a suicide after attempt to murder, they were probing all angles.

Ms. Patni later told police that she acted dead after her husband stabbed her.

She said that it was only after that, Mr. Bachchan left the room and she locked the door from inside.

Mr. Bachchan’s mother, Chandrakanta, was also present in the house at the time of the incident.

It is alleged that he locked her in her room and took away her mobile phone.

However, Mr. Bachchan’s sister Trisha alleged Ms. Patni staged the whole crime scene and was behind the murder.

Narrating the events since Saturday, Ms. Patni’s father said the couple had visited Tilak Nagar to purchase a sofa set after which she left for her parents’ home while her husband went to join a friend for a drink.

“He picked her up for his home in the night. After they reached home Ms. Patni turned down the deceased’s sexual advances because of his aggressive and weird demands. She moved into another room which enraged Mr. Bachchan who attacked her with a stool and a knife,” he said.
