‘They even fought on their honeymoon’

Wife says husband turned violent because she refused physical intimacy

Parents of Shivani Patni, who was allegedly stabbed by her husband Amit Bachchan before he killed himself, have alleged that he would become aggressive whenever she did not concede to his demand of establishing physical intimacy.

Shivani’s father Ashok claimed that her daughter had confided this to her family. He added that even though their daughter’s marital life hadn’t been the smoothest, they never anticipated that Amit would take a drastic step.

“Shivani had mentioned to me on an earlier occasion that Amit got very aggressive when it came to physical relationship. He would force himself on her even when she was sleepy. I suggested that she discussed the matter with her mother,” he said.

The woman in her statement to police has purportedly revealed that the incident took place only because she refused to have sex with him on Saturday night.

Till Sunday evening, Shivani’s parents did not break the news of her husband’s death to her fearing it would affect her recovery.

Amit, who worked for ION Trading company in Noida, and Shivani, who is employed at a business travel management company in Gurgaon, married each other in November last year. The match had been fixed through an online marriage portal.

Even though the woman’s family claimed that she was a part of the decision-making process and had given her complete consent to the marriage, Amit’s sister Trisha blamed Shivani and her parents for the problem in the couple’s relationship.

“They were fighting even on their honeymoon in Singapore. She had very high blood pressure and would abuse Amit over the slightest of issues. He only made efforts to pacify her,” said Trisha.

Their mother Chandrakanta, who was locked in her room, said she woke up around 2 a.m. to go to the toilet, but found the door locked from outside.

“I called out to Amit and Shivani, but there was no response. The only sounds I heard were some footsteps as I tried to open the door,” she told journalists.
