Funds for building 14 new schools approved

The Expenditure Finance Committee of the Delhi Government on Wednesday approved the funding for construction of 14 schools and the re-modelling of the Bawana drain.

Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia, who chaired the EFC meeting said in order to impart better education facilities to children and increase the literacy rate in the Capital city, it has been decided to construct more schools.

Stating that the Delhi Government is obliged to extend the education cover and to provide necessary infrastructure in schools under the Right To education Act the Minister said National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC) Ltd. will construct 14 new school buildings across Delhi.

The places where these buildings would be constructed are Sarita Vihar A Block, Dwarka Sector-1, Dwarka Sector-13, Dwarka Sector-19, Madanpur Khadar Phase-I, Madanpur Khadar Phase-II and Madanpur Khadar Phase-III. The estimated cost of construction of these seven schools would be Rs.102.19 crore.

Besides, NPCC, the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation will also construct school buildings at Rohini Sector-1 (Avantika), Rohini Sector-2, Rohini Sector-3, Rohini Sector-21 (Phase-II), Rohini Sector-21 (Phase-III), Rohini Sector-22 (Phase-III) and Rohini Sector-23. These school buildings would be constructed at a cost of Rs.129.17 crore.

All the new schools will be earthquake resistant and will have provision for fire-fighting system, rainwater harvesting, reverse osmosis water module and energy efficient fittings and fixtures.

Dr. Walia further stated that a revised amount of Rs.6.99 crore has been sanctioned for re-modeling the Bawana drain with re-construction of a section measuring 1,830 metres. He said while the original estimate of the project was Rs.5.76 crore, it has now been revised due to escalation and construction of culverts. The completion of the project, he said, will provide relief to the villagers from the huge drainage congestion that is witnessed during the rainy season.
